Lexus Card Key for Sienna’s with Smart Key

If you don't know what this is, it is a smart key that is shaped like a credit card so it can be tucked away in your wallet. I just added one to my Lexus LS460 so I don't need to carry a FOB in my pocket anymore for that car. You can't pop the trunk or auto start as it has no buttons. Some Toyota owners have figured out which Lexus Card Keys work for their model and have been using them.

Could there be anyone out there that has done this for the Sienna's with Smart Keys. Hoping to begin a thread that will be helpful for anyone interested in getting one for their Smart Key enabled Sienna.

Well begin your thread then. The Lexus SmartAccess card keys have been found to work with many other Toyota models (Prius, Highlander, Tacoma, etc.) and I would be surprised if they didn't work with Sienna.

Did they ever make them thinner? Last time I checked they were even thicker than the old Lexus key cards that had a physical key pressed into a plastic card. My main gripe with using a SmartAccess card with a Sienna would be that it wouldn't allow opening the rear hatch and one of the sliding doors as I approach - something I do every day.

The key card is slightly smaller than a credit card and about the thickness of two credit cards. If you can’t live without the fob buttons for power sliding doors this probably is not for you. The doors will still power slide if you gently pull the handle remember so you don’t loose the power, just the ability to trigger it remotely. Someone over on the Tacoma forums seems to outline a way to figure out which card key you need for your Toyota but I haven’t fully wrapped my head around that post yet. I have some pictures of the card key to insert but I get a message attachment limit reached which is strange since I’ve never posted pictures.

spent the weekend practicing my Google-fu, scouring the interwebs to research whether or not this is possible for the Sienna - I wasn't able to find anything certain just yet, but hopefully the information I discovered will lead us down the right path. Like @Geezer1 mentioned, folks have been able to make this work with other Toyota vehicles - here's a writeup of what I've learned so far:

3rd Gen Tacoma

3rd Gen Highlander

3rd Gen Prius

Folks have gone down several different paths, from comparing the code for the smart key control module, to the FCC ID on the remotes, to the codes printed on the actual circuit board of the remote.

From the TN thread, the 3rd Gen Tacoma and 3rd Gen Highlander share the same smart key control module as the 3rd Gen IS (TMLF12-1) and works with Lexus Smart Key 89904-53511 (17 IS Turbo/RC Turbo, 16 IS200t/RC200t, 14-15 IS250, 16-17 IS300/RC300, 14-17 IS350, 15-17 LX570/NX200t/NX300h/RC350)

From the PC thread:
* Prius models with FCC ID HYQ14AAB are compatible with Lexus Smart Key FCC ID HYQ14ABB p/n 89904-50480 (08-11 GS350/GS460, 08-10 IS F/LS460, 08-15 IS250/IS350, 08-16 LX570)
* Prius models with FCC ID HYQ14ACX are compatible with Lexus Smart Key FCC ID HYQ14AEB p/n 89994-48142 (11-17 CT200h, 10-12 HS250h, 09-12 LS600hL, 10-15 RX350/450h)
* Highlander models with FCC ID HYQ14FBA are compatible with Lexus Smart Key FCC ID HYQ14CBB p/n 89904-53521 (15-17 NX200t/NX300h)

(Disclaimer: I used lexuspartsnow.com to cross reference what models/years each Lexus p/n was compatible with - not sure how accurate that site is)

Now all of this was pretty confusing - no real rhyme or reason for why certain models were compatible with others. That was, until I came across T-SB-0033-13 and L-SB-0007-13 - Technical Service Bulletins from both Toyota and Lexus, titled "Smart Key Specifications". Here's an excerpt:

Image

Notice how there are effectively two groupings - both use the same frequencies (312.15/314.35 MHz), but the main difference is that one uses AM and the other, FM. Cross reference the two groupings with the information laid out above (model years notwithstanding) and things start to make sense.

The TSBs are a little dated (from 2013 - @fibber2, any chance you can check with your contacts to see if there is a more updated version?)

What doesn't make sense to me is what was stated in the PC thread about the two different Prius key fobs doesn't quite match up with the information laid out in the TSBs.

So, given the information stated in both TSBs, my theory is that the Sienna should be compatible with any of the Lexus models that use an FM Smart Key.

Like I mentioned at the beginning - nothing too certain, but hopefully this will lead us down the right path.

FWIW, I also learned that the smart key control module for the Sienna is TMLF8-20, the FCCID of my key fob is HYQ14ADR, and the code printed on the circuit board of my key fob is 271451-5691 G N E.

That's all for tonight - once I have some more time, I'll look into a Lexus dealership with a lenient return policy and perhaps do some experimenting of my own since I have the Techstream software running on a laptop.

Hope this helps!

Success!

With the recent 15% off promotions on eBay, I decided to test my theory (knowing that if it didn’t work, I could return to the eBay seller and just lose out on return shipping)

I picked up a Smart Key Card for a 2011-2017 CT200h - Lexus part number 89994-48142 / FCCID HYQ14AEB

Looked up instructions on how to program the key through Techstream and I was done within 10 minutes of grabbing the package from my mailbox :)

Next step is to figure out how the flat emergency key that slides into the Smart Card Key (which needs to be purchased separately) works - some folks reported that they were able to get the key cut properly so I’ll report back on that once I have more details.

Interesting! I don't know if my Techstream version 10.something.something will work on my 2018, I haven't have a change to hook it up yet. But if it does, that is something I will consider doing.

Holy Cow! I started this thread but somehow missed the last few posts. So should that Lexus card key part number work for a 13 limited? All 3rd gen push button starts?

When I programmed one for my Lexus I got the physical key cut by an independent locksmith for 30 bucks. No need to go to a dealer for this. Find a locksmith that can laser cut keys and bring your physical key from your regular fob. They stick them in a little box and type your make and model number into the computer and that’s it. The blank Lexus card key does not come with a physical key. The blank physical key is a separate part number so needs to be purchased separately.

Thank you so much for figuring this out! I will report back once I’m done with mine.

Is this robust and waterproof? I've been looking for a solution for beach and waterpark use where I could carry it with me in my secure swimsuit pocket.

#13 ·
It is not waterproof but it will fit better in one of those small waterproof containers you can hang around your neck than the regular fob does. I believe on some Toyota and Lexus vehicles you can disable the smart key and lock it in your glove compartment and just take the slide in physical key with you. I just haven’t figured out if the Sienna smart key can be disabled.

In regards to the amazon link- I purchased my Lexus card key and physical key from that seller, although through eBay. They put a custom listing up for me that included both the card key and physical key for my Lexus. Price was good and you get a 1 year warranty since they are a Lexus dealer.

Hello
I would look in your owners manual and find out which smart keys your cars computer will except. If you don't have one you can probably down load the PDF for your cars manual. You have to have an empty slot your car might just be able to have 4 keys programed to the ECU. Once you understand which Frequency ID your car will except Look for that smart card on eBay for instance HYQ14AEB this HAS to be in the list for your car in the owners manual just dont buy one of these not knowing. They have to be virgin also if the card was USED you probably can not program it very easy without the help of a lock smith. You will need a computer and the Techstream software and OB2 cable to add keys.

So I bought a Lexus card key with FCC ID HYQ14AEB because it's the one most likely to be compatible with my 2019 Sienna, based on what I could understand from the information online.

But when the locksmith came to program it, he said his programmer wouldn't even accept the FCC ID of this key.

Does anyone know a locksmith in the San Francisco Bay Area who could program this?

I’ve programmed a Lexus card key myself for a Lexus using techstream. At no point was the ID required so I do not understand your locksmiths comment. Did you buy a new Lexus card key? I believe all keys need to be wiped if you buy a used one which is not something I wanted to try.

#25 ·
I bought a new key. The locksmith didn't know what Techstream was when I mentioned it to him, but I'm not surprised because I've learned that Techstream is a Toyota specific thing, so I understand that a general locksmith wouldn't know what it is.

I looked into getting a Techstream cable and the software and doing the programming myself, but the problem is that I don't have a compatible laptop. My Mac is one of those new ones that won't run Windows through VirtualBox. So I'd have to buy a laptop to do this myself.

Most old laptops can run those techstream discs you can buy on eBay. The ebay listings will have the spec requirements, May be worth spending 20 bucks on an old laptop if you have multiple Toyota’s. Putting these ebay versions of techstream on your regular computer should be avoided and I would recommend disconnecting wifi so they don’t connect to your home network also.

Somebody created a copy for VirtualBox. I used that.

If you don't know what VirtualBox is, it is, basically, an app that allows you to create a virtual operating system within your operating system. Like you could create a Windows XP within Windows 10, Windows 10 within MacOS, etc. Somebody created a Windows XP copy with Techstream pre-installed on it. I imported that copy into VirtualBox and used it that way.

If you wanna find that VirtualBox copy, google "5 min to download install techstream"

One thing to note about this version of Techstream is that it's a bit older. So my 2019 Sienna wasn't listed on there. I had to manually select 2018 Sienna, but that wasn't a problem for the key programming.
