Question about Using Techstream

I have a pre-owned 2014 Sienna LE with one key fob and want to:

1) Program a second fob;
2) Remove any prior ones; and
3) Activate the alarm.

I'm moderately tech savvy for a lay person, but a lay person nonetheless. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to get my ducks in a row relating to the proper software and/or VCI cable to get before I start in. I can very easily imagine myself downloading software and buying a cable only to have them not work. Can anyone tell me:

1. What version of the software do I need and where is the best place to get it? I'm confused as to whether TechStream TIS is the same as GTS, and whether it's free or not. Seems like there are some free downloads but I'm confused b/c some of them seem to be billed as diagnostics, and I'm not sure if I can use those to make adjustments or not.

2. I've seen some cite discrepancies with 32 vs. 64 bit systems . . . does TechStream/GTS work on 64?

3. Does the VCI cable need to match the software's version? Or will a cable operate with an earlier version of the software?

4. Some info has given me the impression the cable comes with the software, but others say it's just the drivers that come with it? What's the deal on that?

Much thanks to anyone who can help out with any or all of these.

I'm not sure where the glass breakage sensor goes but I know the hood switch will actually be part of the front hood latch with a wiring harness attached to it. I believe if not the wiring harness will be just tied and capped off. I'm not 100% positive on this as I am going off my memory of when I had my 2011 Camry SE and my 2008 Tundra SR5. My v7. Techstream worked with both of those vehicles as well as my Sienna LE which I just picked up a week ago.

Also, I bought my cable and techstream software off of ebay back in January 2014. It was listed as

"2012 Newest V7.11.010 MINIVCI V7 for TOYOTA Cable & Software"

Bought mine on ebay for $22ish. I believe its version 10. The cable came with a cd that you can view and operate with a windows 32bit system. 64bit won't work for me. You need to explore the disc and fine the "readme" doc and it should explain everything. Most of these bootleg disc come with install instructions on them. They will have the needed drivers on the disc and the instructions will tell you what to do. It's fairly easy. Good luck.

Can't get it to work . . .

I can't get the software to connect to the car no matter what I do. I need a few basic questions answered to know if I'm even on the right track.

1. I've seen conflicting info on this - do I need any kind of subscription to any software to do this - or is it just a matter of having the cord and the software? I keep seeing in various places that I need a subscription to either connect and use the software at all, OR that I can connect w/o a subscription but that I can't do anything other than pure diagnostics w/o subscribing - so that maybe I couldn't turn on the alarm or program a fob, for example. Is this true? Do I need any sort of subscription to do all this? I don't work at a dealer or shop. I'm just a regular guy trying to change a few settings.

2. I am using version 10.10.018. I am using a 64-bit laptop with Windows 10. I've read that this can be done but I can't confirm that. Al the links I find have inactive links to the driver. Can it be done? If so, can anyone point me to an active link with the driver?

3. I have two errors stumping me. One is that the cable is "Unable to Connect to VIM." I don't even know what VIM refers to, but obviously the computer/software wont' connect to the car. I get a help screen with some pointers on that, but I can't make heads or tails of them. Some don't apply but I can't make heads or tails of the others.

4. The other error is when the software asks for a key. Do I need a key? Is this from the subscription? I found a website that told me what to enter, but it didn't see to work. Of course, this could be b/c of the issue of inability to connect in #3 above.

From everything I read, getting the settings changed once you're connected seems easy enough. But connecting seems tricky. I would like to at least know whether I've got some mere technical hang-up, or whether I've got to subscribe/pay/register to even do this, or whether I'm even able to as a non-auto professional without a dealership or shop.

Thanks to anyone who can offer any pointers.

The drivers should be included with the CD or any media that came with your cable. Since cables vary from seller to seller and site to site, it may not be universal.

There isn't a key or serial for techstream. You need to modify one of the files for it to work.

VIM error should go away once you install the correct drivers and set it up in techstream. If you do a search for it, there are detailed instructions. You just need to read every single sentence, I missed one and spent an hour trying to find what I'm missing

Thanks Jack-e-son,

The instructions that came with the CD simply give super-basic info about how to install the program from the CD. I did that, no trouble there. But they don't address the VIM connectivity issue nor the request for a key.

I have found several sets of detailed instructions online that are substantially the same but that vary on particular items or contingencies such as 32 vs. 64 bit system, which version of techstream is being used, and which operating system is being used, and I have tried them so far as they applied, but they don't yield different results.

When you say " install the correct drivers and set it up in techstream," do you mean to say there's something necessary to set up techstream after the drivers are installed?

Also, since it asks me for a key, do you have any idea which file file I need to modify? and how?

Thanks,
Matt

I tried those instructions, and everything went fine until step four when I tried to run the XHorse firmware update tool. I just didn't get the screen it says you should get. It says if you get that screen, your cable is up and running with 64-bit system and you can proceed to the techstream stuff. But it doesn't say what to do if no firmware update screen comes up. Do you have any idea of what to try next?

Not sure if this matters, but the mini-CD I got with the cable has a different version of techstream than this guy is using. Now, I still downloaded the files from dropbox that he suggested, rather than using the ones on my mini-CD. But the dropbox files he posted didn't have the .msi file itself, but only the .reg file. So I used the .msi file from my CD. But the CD is version 10, not version 8, so I'm not sure if that matters. I suppose so but I'm not sure. that's the only file from my CD I used. Everything else I used from his dropbox file. But nowhere did it tell me to use the .reg file, and it didn't even include the .msi file, which is why I had to use the one from my CD. Frustrating. Confusing.

I'm also wondering - does the cable ITSELF, matter? Is it possible that the cable I got can only be used with V10? Or is it not the case that the cable needs to be used with particular versions?

Cable is just a Serial to CAN bus converter. I have used same cable with different Techstream versions and it works. Just need to install drivers for the cable and the techstream will detect it and connect with the vehicle. I am currently using ver 10 i believe and have used it to program a new remote and delete the old ones. The following video was quite helpful on the programming.

I'm confused, the driver pertains to the software, not the cable, right?

Just got my cable (ordered this one for $16) and did not have a CD/DVD drive in any laptop, so I thought I was screwed. However, I d/l an even newer version of Techstream, 12.20.024, from this link and followed the directions in the OP in this thread. I did it on Windows 10 and there were a few hiccups.

1) There was no Firmwearupdatetool.exe so I had to skip that step.

2) The names of the devices were not the same. I found "Universal Serial Converter" under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" heading and "USB Serial Port" under "Ports (COM & LPT)" and made sure it was COM4 (use the advanced button under port setting of the properties to change it. I tried to do the update driver on each and point to the xhorse directory, but both said the current driver was newer.

3) I did do the registry update/merge and once I did that it worked.

4) As to the key, there is a txt file that has the key in it that you have to use to activate it. (Instructions.txt)

I connected my 2012 Camry as it sit the newest Toyota we have and TEchstream worked flawlessly. For reference, the DLC3 cable diagnostic showed only K and L as red, while all the rest, including CAN-L and CAN-H as green. So, no ECU flashing. Still trying to figure out what the K line does.

So, I can confirm that it DOES work in Win 10, you just need to "wiggle it a bit" to make it work. :)
